Why the failures?
There are many different things that factor into play with each console and not all red ring errors are the same. One accepted school of thought is focused on the "X" clamps that hold the heatsinks on to the motherboard. With the extreme heat that the console produces, coupled with a cheaply made motherboard, we experience a flexing of the motherboard which ultimately causes the systems to overheat. There are also cases where the heatsink compound / thermal grease has heated and oozed away from the die, hardening and drying, thus adding or causing more problems. To make matters worse, 50% of the boxes I service, the cpu heatsink is covered in dust. Dust building up on your fans and heatsink can and will most likely help cause your system to overheat.
There are things you can do of course to help ensure you get the most out of your Xbox 360. Keep it well ventilated and upright. The motherboard generates the most heat and when the console is laying down, the heat sits underneath and helps heat the 360 up.
DVD Drive problems.
Other Xbox 360 problems include problems with the DVD drives. Problems range from the DVD Tray not opening and closing properly, to the "unplayable disc" or "open tray" messages, caused by faulty lasers or other components within the DVD drive.
